Kano is Tagalog slang for Amerikano. In 1969, Victor Pearson (Kano), an American Vietnam War veteran relocated in a poor remote village in the province Negros Occidental in the Philippines. He was discharged during the war for post-traumatic stress disorder. He soon marries a Filipino woman and invites further women to live with him. With his disability fund, Pearson lived like a king in his compound for more than two decades, where the main activity was sex.

He built a harem, comprised of women who came from various parts of the province. Some of them applied as housemaids, some of them were students invited by Pear- son’s women to hang by the pool. Some of them, perhaps in the tradition of the feudal times, were offered by their own mothers in exchange for regular pay. They were all lured by Pearson’s generosity. He gave them allowance, jewellery, shopping money. Many of them were very young, ages ranging between 11 and 35.

My Harem 

In 2001, He was charged with over 80 counts of rape and sentenced to 80 years in jail. Many of the women remain by his side. Actual filming of this feature-length documentary began in 2007 when Pearson was incarcerated in the Negros Occidental Provincial Jail. After five years of shooting and weeks of interviews with lawyers, city officials, social workers and Pearson’s friends, film-maker Monster Jimenez eventually found the focus of her story in the people closest to Pearson: his women. His daughter, sisters, and the women he had sex with. The result is a portrait of an extended dysfunctional family. A story of how love, power, violence, and the deep roots of poverty and abuse intertwine the lives of a charismatic small-town boy from Oregon and countless women. –Göteborg International Film Festival
